Daily Verse: Ecclesiastes 5:10

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.

The lure of money can be so incredibly strong. The common theme in our world is that we should be constantly pursuing money. The more we get, the happier we will be. And the idea of getting enough money is foolish…no one can get enough money, right? Often times we place money as the top factor when it comes to making a big decision. Take changing jobs for example. The pay is at times so enticing that we tend to minimize other negative factors of making the change. Even if making a change means our stress level goes up and our quality of life goes down, money is still king. Who cares, we are making more dough! The tricky thing with money is highlighted above in the text: “Whoever loves money never has money enough”. Will we ever be satisfied? At what point do we set aside a great financial opportunity in favor of living happy, content, and at peace? It seems almost foolish in this competitive and driven world to pass-up an opportunity to make more money. Yet at times, that is exactly what we are called to do. We are to place family, friends and our relationship with God above financial gain. We are to be content with what we have and trust the Lord. Hebrews 13:5 summarizes it well: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Whether we are rich or poor, God will always be present. We may not be able to afford everything we want in this life, but when we follow the direction of the Lord, we will certainly have what we need. Now I am not suggesting we push aside ambition and drive, but rather advising that we cautiously and prayerful consider new opportunities that land on our doorstep each day…taking time to allow the Lord to influence the path that we take. And when he does speak in our lives, we faithfully follow his lead with unwavering discipline, trusting that he has our best interest at hand. May we seek the Lord’s counsel in our lives today, allowing his perfect direction to lead our way. To God be the glory!
