Daily Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Test everything. Hold on to the good.

We are fed a lot of different opinions, ideas, and opportunities during each day. One minute it’s a bold headline about a celebrities opinion on a popular topic…next it’s a news report about a supposed proven statistic about how we are to live…then it’s a religious leader prophesying about some far off concept of life and death. Bottom line, we are fed a lot…and it comes at us rapidly. Some we give conscious thought to, others just blanket our subconscious.  As instructed in the text above, when something new lands on our doorstep, we are to test it. Test it according to what? According to popular opinion? The Constitution? The laws of the land? While all are certainly convincing and powerful benchmarks, they pale in comparison to the Word of God…the true source of wisdom that we are to use to test everything in our lives. We are to consult God’s Word whenever a new idea deemed “appropriate” comes our way. Our whenever a new law is proposed…or when a particular popular movement is gaining steam and requesting our participation. We are to consult God’s Word before we speak and before we act. We are to consult God’s Word in our relationships as parents, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, husbands and wives. We are to consult it when we choose websites to view, TV programs to watch, and music to listen to. And when we come across something that opposes the Word of God…something that takes God’s commands and either ignores them or bends them a bit…we are to get away from that offensive thing. We are to distance ourselves from the sin in this world and cling to what is good. Cling to those things that follow the will of God…those things that promote His ideals for our lives. It’s about what God wants…not what we want. Now we can’t be expected to stall out every few seconds, crack open the text, and consult the source. That is why it is important to spend time daily in the Word…so that when something new comes our way, we already know where God stands on the issue. May we test everything that comes our way, shedding the bad and embracing the good. To God be the glory!
