Psalm 108:12-13

Psalm 108:12-13

Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain victory, and he will trample down our enemies.

Who is the #1 enemy in our lives? Who takes the top spot as the most despised opponent in our lives? The answers to this question are likely quite varied, but when we give thought to what truly opposes us and beats us down on a daily basis, there is only one thing that takes that #1 spot. There is only one thing that seems to always be present and finds its way into our lives despite our best efforts to keep it at bay. It’s sin…plain and simple, sin is our #1 enemy. Sin has been planting it’s big nasty foot in our lives since our first breath…and unfortunately, it’s going to linger around like a terrible virus until our final breath. It’s going to cause us to stumble, lead us to say things we later regret, and encourage us to hurt those around us. And not matter how hard we try to rid our lives completely of sin, it always seems to sneak back into the scene. On our own, it’s a hopeless battle…a challenge that cannot be overcome…a struggle destined for defeat. Bottom line, sin is our worst enemy. Period. But here’s the rub: God has given us the command to be perfect…God has instructed us to have no place for sin in our lives, and if we do choose sin, we have to suffer the consequences. God’s a just God and cannot leave a crime unpunished…so someone has to pay. Seems ridiculously hopeless, doesn’t it? But here’s where hope enters the scene. God hasn’t left us helpless and hopeless in our self-inflicted miserable state. Thankfully, God sent a solution to our enormous problem. God sent a Man…his own Son…a perfect and blameless man…to show us how we are to live…and then take the punishment that was justifiably intended for me and you. Jesus…the Savior…our one solution, our one hope, and the only One that secured victory over sin. We won’t win every battle in this life and there will be times when we return home bruised and battered. But one thing is absolutely concrete and unshakeable…when this life comes to a close, we will realize the greatest victory over the most worthless foe known to man. Once and for all, we will be rid of that enemy named sin…no more struggle, no more defeats, no more black eyes and swollen lips. Only victory remains. Find peace in that today. To God alone be all glory!
