Psalm 107:1
Give thanks to the Lord,
for he is good; his love endures forever.
The words in this verse occur in multiple places throughout
the Bible and therefore can often be skimmed over without drawing a second thought.
But take a second to read them again…slowly, allowing the message of each word
to soak in a bit. In fact, read the verse multiple times, over and over…and see
if it speaks something new. “Give thanks
to the Lord, for he is good”…we are called to give thanks to God simply because
he is good. God doesn’t have to give us anything or promise anything to warrant
our praise. We give him praise and adoration simply because he is good. It’s a
tough concept since we equate someone being “good” in this world by the good
actions they take. But with God, he is simply good because he is. Period. And
you could argue that because he is the Boss of all things, and because he is
perfect, he would be justified in simply reigning on high, apart from a bunch of
broken fools like us. Thankfully though, God isn’t resolved to resting in his goodness
and receiving praise from on high. Thankfully God has such great love for us
that he comes down to our level and showers us with more blessings than we can
even count. And as a result, we have even more reason to give him praise…because
he is good…and because he acts on that goodness. “His love endures forever”…there is no end to God’s love for us. He
loved us at our first spark of life, he loves us today, and he will love us from
now into forever. We see this through Jesus and how his sacrifice, completed
thousands of years ago, is still completely relevant and active today. Need evidence?
See Hebrews 9:26…“But now he (Christ) has
appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the
sacrifice of himself.” The sacrifice Christ made lasts forever for those
that believe in him. God loved us at the time of Christ’s death, he loved us
when Christ rose from the dead in defeat of sin, and he still loves us today,
thousands of years after Christ’s death and resurrection. And through our faith
in him, God has promised us heaven and one day a new earth, where all will be
right, all will be perfectly good and sin will have no place in our lives. That’s
love forever…no end in sight. So today, take a moment to let Psalm 107:1 play
in your mind…and find peace in knowing that we have a great God…that we have great
God who’s love for us will never die out. If we have only that in this life,
then we have all that we need. To God be all glory!
