Hebrews 6:19-20
We have this hope as
an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind
the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.
An anchor provides security for a boat. A boat, unanchored
on the water, is subject to the whims of the wind and waves. By its very design,
it is meant to move with the waves and be pushed by the wind. Without an
anchor, a ship really has very little say in whether it goes or stays. Without
an anchor, a vessel could be easily swept out into the vast sea, never to be
found. Without an anchor, a vessel could be smashed into a rocky shore and
broken into pieces. But with the anchor, the boat is held tight, in one place,
no longer subject to being destroyed by wind and waves. The vessel will still
take its share of beatings as the wind and waves do not stop simply because the
boat is anchored…no they keep beating at the sides of the ship, determined to
break the craft free from its hold. But if the anchor is a good one, and if the
hold on the sea floor is solid, the boat remains in place…secure, protected,
locked-in. We have a lot of choices around what we can anchor to in our lives…we
could anchor to our jobs and bank accounts…we could anchor to our health and
physical abilities…we could even anchor to our relationships and social
interactions. But the thing about these worldly things is that they make weak
anchors…they don’t hold up. Sure, they made hold secure for a period of time,
giving us a false sense of security. But at some point, all these worldly anchors
are going to come loose…and then what? When this life comes to a close for each
of us, if we are anchored to worldly things instead of Christ, we are that ship
that is absolutely destined for complete destruction. All those worldly things
that we once thought held us secure and sound are completely worthless…the rope
has snapped and we are at the mercy of the wind and waves. And without Christ,
there is absolutely no mercy in the wind and waves. But if we are anchored in Christ…if
our anchor is our true belief that Christ is THE Redeemer…then we are tied to an
unflinching, unwavering, and unfailing anchor…one that bridges the gap between
us and God and provides complete confidence that we are secure. May we seek
each day to further anchor our lives in Christ…living in His Word, speaking with
him in prayer, seeking the direction of the Spirit…and find peace in knowing
that we are secure, we are protected, we are forgiven and redeemed! To God be
all glory!
