Proverbs 12:16

Proverbs 12:16

Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.

More times than not, I find myself in the category of “fool”. Far too often I get aggravated or annoyed by something and I allow it to lead me into saying or doing something I later regret. Perhaps it’s selfishness, arrogance, fatigue, or just plain stupidity that leads me to wade into the waters of sin when someone gets under my skin or does something that I don’t agree with. Usually when the moment has passed and the fire has cooled a bit, I find myself taking the old “face palm” position, feeling like an idiot for how I reacted. And usually God seems to raise the notion in my mind of “Hey bud, it’s not all about you.” It’s humbling, yet true that this life is not all about making me, or you, happy and making sure the world aligns with our ideals, beliefs, and wants. Rather this life is all about aligning things with what God wants. Our lives should be all about speaking, acting, and thinking in ways that align with God’s commands and plans. And when we show our annoyance with another and react in a sinful manner, we are not in alignment with God’s commands. In fact, every time we exhibit sin in our lives, we are standing in complete misalignment with God. Thankfully God displays grace to us through Christ and sprinkles his wisdom into our lives so that we not only become aware of our failings, but that we also have a way out from under them. God equips us with the wisdom and good sense to overlook the mistakes of another instead of raking them over the coals. And he does this by pointing us to Christ…showing us that he forgives our failings every day because of what this perfect Man did on our behalf. We are to dish out that same forgiveness to those in our lives. We are to swallow our aggravation, anger, and annoyance, and forgive one another. Simple as that. May we strive for that daily, remembering what Christ did for our sinful behavior, and extend the same love and forgiveness to those around us. To God alone be the glory!
