Genesis 12:1-2

Genesis 12:1-2

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing”.

Abram provided a great example of faithful obedience to the Lord. He had established a life with a business, family, and friends when the Lord came calling. The Lord said pack it all up, your moving out, and instructed Abram to walk hundreds of miles to a new land that he would call home. Imagine that…your life is comfortable, you are established, you are surrounded by family and friends, and God comes and uproots it all. We would probably search for all kinds of excuses why we shouldn’t leave our established life. We would probably be filled with anxiety, uncertainty and might even feel like shaking our fist at God a bit. I am sure Abram experienced various emotions when God spoke this radical message into his life. But Abram still followed suit…Abram obediently packed up all his belongings, gathered all his people, and set out for the long journey on foot. You catch that?...on foot, walking, hundreds of miles. That’s obedience, that’s dedication. God promised great things to Abram for his obedience and discipline…God promised to grow Abram into a great nation and bless his children with an abundance of land. God had Abrams best interest in mind…God was clearly going to take care of him. There are undoubtedly times in our lives when God calls us to make a change. There are times when God might call us to leave a job and take on some new venture. There are times when God might be calling us to change a relationship or start a new one. And there may be times when God simply calls us deepen our relationship with him by giving him more time each day. Whatever God is calling us to do, it should be our privilege to follow his call. And much like Abram, we must trust that God is working for what is best in our lives. We will likely be uncomfortable at some point in the process but that’s just a part of the journey. Just think of Abram…he must have been uncomfortable countless times over the hundreds of miles that he walked. But he did it…and he did it faithfully, willingly, and with deep trust in the Lord. Following the Lord may not always make logical sense to us, but it is undoubtedly what is best for us. May we listen for the Lord’s call today, may we follow with strict discipline and commitment, and may we genuinely trust in his loving direction. To God alone be the glory!
