Hebrews 4:13

Hebrews 4:13

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

I will admit, I am not a good swimmer, often saying that I swim as well as a rock. When I am in deep water, I stay afloat for a bit but eventually grow tired and need help. It’s at that point when my body is completely tired and the bottom of the lake is nowhere within reach that I get that kind of panicked feeling that I need help. I desperately need something to hold onto that floats. Without that help, I am doomed as I will eventually run out of energy completely and sink to the bottom. I realize that I am completely dependent on that life vest…the one that wraps around me and keeps my head comfortably above water. When I am on dry land, this life vest is not that important to me. In fact, I might even forget its significance altogether. But when I am in the water, it suddenly becomes critical and truly lifesaving. Jesus is that life vest in our lives (pardon the cliché here). Without Christ, we are doomed…we are destined to sink to the bottom and nothing we can do will change that fact. We can’t “tread enough water” before God to somehow keep our heads above water. The text above reminds us of how deeply dependent we are on the saving grace found in Jesus Christ. God is witness to ever single sin we commit in our lives. From start to finish he knows it all. Not one mistake goes unnoticed. Romans 14:12 states “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” When our time in this life comes to a close, we will stand before God, called to answer for how we lived our lives. God will have a record of our lives, so there will be no hiding. And we will be at the final stage, so there are no chances for a “do over”. If we stand alone before God, we are destined for hell, for we have failed miserably in fulfilling his commands. But if we stand with Christ at our side….if we stand with the only man to perfectly fulfill God’s Law, then we are no longer doomed. For through genuine faith in the Savior, we are not seen as unclean but rather clean…we are not seen as unrighteous but rather righteous…we are not seen as guilty, but rather as holy and blameless before our God. Make no mistake, we are completely and unequivocally dependent on salvation through Christ. He is our only life vest…our only hop…our only rescue. Period. May we truly acknowledge that today in how we live our day…in how we speak, think, and act…professing the Gospel in our lives today. To God alone be the glory!
