In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The above text is the very first verse in the Bible and it’s
interesting that in this very first verse, we are called to have faith. Right
out of the gate, in the very first sentence, we must have real, deep faith in
God. We must trust that what is written in his Word is the truth…the real deal,
nothing fake, nothing exaggerated. Through faith, we know that God created the
heavens and the earth…simply because it says it, plain as day, right there in the
first verse of the Bible. And it is only through the Holy Spirit that we are
even able to have faith. Just see 1 Corinthians 12:3, “…no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit”.
Without the Holy Spirit dwelling in our lives, words like those above in
Genesis 1 would seem pretty farfetched and hard to believe or even understand. Without
the Spirit, we would read the words above and say “Wait, where did God come
from? How did he just exist? And what did he create the heavens and earth with?
Surely he didn’t just speak them into being.” Without the Holy Spirit, much of
what is in the Bible…Jesus rising from the dead…receiving Christ’s body and
blood through the bread and wine…becoming a part of God’s family by having
water poured on our heads…it would all seem puzzling and maybe even comical.
But because the Holy Spirit has a prominent place in our lives, what might seem
like nonsense to some, makes perfect sense to us. Without the Holy Spirit, we
are unable to believe in Christ as Savior…and without faith in Christ, we stand
in opposition to God…and if we stand in opposition to God, we are doomed to pay
the price for the sinful lives we have lead. So today, may we give thanks to
God for the Spirit…may we give thanks to God for the ability to see Christ as
Lord…and may we give thanks to God that we no longer dwell in the dark, but
have come to see, understand, and embrace his holy Word as truth. To God alone
be the glory!
