Daily Verse: Deuteronomy 8:11-14

Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

When things are going good in our lives…when we are fat and happy…when the job is stable, the house is fixed up, the car is running well, and all our relationships are humming along nicely, it becomes easy to forget about God. It becomes easy to think that somehow, through the work of our own two hands, through our personal drive, determination, and that fluffy “human spirit” that is always referenced in the media, we somehow made all that is good in our lives. We somehow did it all on our own. We forget God…we forget that God provided all the good that has been laid out before us. God provided us with the ability and skills to secure and retain that great job…God provided the job that provided the money that allowed us to purchase that car and home…God placed the friends and family in our lives that make up those relationships that we value so much. God kept us healthy, God kept us well-fed, and God kept us safe…it has ALL been provided through our incredibly merciful and loving God. Without him, we would have nothing…absolutely nothing. Period. May we take time to pause today to count the blessings in our lives…to literally an inventory of all that is good in our world…and give thanks to God for each and every thing, acknowledging that the credit does not belong to us, but rather to him. To God be the glory!
