When I was a child, I thought that for some reason God
started and stopped at the doors to the church. Whether I consciously realized
it or not, my actions seemed to confirm it. Sadly, that’s an easy trap to fall
into. When we are around God’s Word, like we are in church, we are reminded of
how our Lord instructs us to live. But when we live that environment, we are
quickly inundated with millions of distractions and alternative ideas that
cause us to live contrary to God’s commands. In the text above, Moses is
relaying to the people what God has told him, specifically the commandments
regarding how they are to live. The key part about the text is that it makes it
clear that God’s commands are supposed to be a part of every aspect of our
lives. There is not a time in our lives where we are not supposed to have God’s
Word fresh in our hearts and minds. We are supposed to teach them to our
children, discuss them with our neighbors, think about them when are up and
about and when we are lying down. In fact, the text above goes so far as to say
you should “bind them to your foreheads” so that all will see them and every time
you look in the mirror, you too will see them. Now this doesn’t necessarily mean
we are to break out the Sharpie and start making notes on our actual face.
Rather it is highlighting the importance of making God’s Word spill into every
corner of our lives…keeping it fresh in our hearts and minds. But naturally as
we get older, our memories grow weaker…and what we read in God’s Word on Sunday
might not be so fresh by Wednesday afternoon. That is why we are to daily be in
God’s Word…so that we are constantly reminded of how we are to speak, how we
are to think, and how we are to act. What a privileged people we are to have
God’s Living Word right at our fingertips…day in and day out…providing perfect
direction for our lives! May we make it a priority to soak it in daily, letting
nothing separate us from its perfect message. To God be the glory!
