Daily Verse: Deuteronomy 12:32

See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

As Christians, we get into trouble when we start cherry picking God’s Word. We get snared when we don’t take his Word in its entirety and apply it to our lives. Rather we grab those things that fit well into our current lives and brush under the rug those that would require us to make a change. But repeatedly throughout the Bible, we find God calling us to follow ALL of his commands, not just those that are easy for us to apply in our lives. We are not to just keep, for example, rules 1-3 while ignoring 4-7 …because 4-7 are tough and would require some significant overhaul in our lives. Rules 4-7 make us uncomfortable…rules 4-7 might require us to sever a relationship that we really enjoy…rules 4-7 might require us to get rid of a filthy habit that we secretly really enjoy. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, meant to relay God’s message directly to us and shape our lives. Through God’s Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, we can undergo a daily evolution…a daily refining…a daily sharpening, where the Lord works to distance us from our sinful behavior. It is a gift to know God’s commands…it is a gift to have a text that explains things that will actually make our lives BETTER! And it is a privilege to work each day to follow the Lord’s commands. For it is only by the grace of the Lord that through the active Holy Spirit in our lives, we don’t go through this refinement, sharpening, and remodeling on our own…God is there every step of the way. May we take time to read every part of God’s commands, soaking it into our lives, digesting it to its core, and allowing it to reshape our lives with each new day. To God be the glory!
