My young son likes to be carried, especially during those
long, boring trips to the store. And while he is a young guy, he is definitely
not light. In fact at times, it feels like carrying around a sack of concrete
that shifts its weight around every few seconds. When he finally decides he’s
had enough of one parent, he asks to be carried by the other. As he is
transferred to my wife, the feeling of relief is fantastic. It’s an instant “Ahhh”
as the “burden” is transferred from my arms to hers. I think that when we carry
around anxiety and worry in our lives, it’s like shouldering a sack of concrete
that consumes our minds and drains our energy. Anxiety is a normal part of
life. We worry about our jobs…we worry about whether or not we are raising our
kids correctly…we worry about money…we worry about health issues. We worry a
lot. But in the text above, we see that we have an outlet for our anxiety. We
have a Lord that loves us so deeply that he welcomes our burdens…he welcomes
the opportunity to shoulder the load for us. But we have to make the conscious decision
to hand it over to God. We have to make the genuine decision to step back from the
worry, hand it to God, and say “It’s all yours, I can’t handle it anymore”. It’s
not easy…in fact it might even seem silly or ridiculous…handing this real life
trouble over to a God that we can’t technically even see. But that is where
faith and trust come into play. And when we trust that God is in the mix, and we
do truly hand the issue over to Him, we experience that great relief. It may
not be instant. It may take time. But it can be real and it can lead to peace
in our lives. I pray that we turn to the Lord when the anxiety, worry, and
burden start to build-up, trusting that He can take the load and bring us true
relief. To God be the glory!
