My daughters school just completed a canned food drive for
the local food pantry. As an incentive for the children to gather as many cans
as possible, the class with the highest count would be rewarded with a class
party. Without at least some kind of incentive, it’s likely that the school
would have gathered very few cans. When we are asked to do something, we
naturally except some benefit in return. We are inherently selfish creatures…the
idea of giving without receiving something in return is not too attractive. As
followers of Christ, we should be so filled the Spirit that we seek out
opportunities to give to those in need. We should be so excited about the life saving
grace that we have received through the Gospel, that we want to share it with
anyone we come in contact with. Now that may seem a little awkward and weird…but
we don’t have to necessarily break out the Book of Matthew and start preaching the
Gospel message word for word. It’s easier than that. We can simply love as
Christ loved. That simple. That easy. We can buy a meal, hold open a door, help
change a tire, or buy a basket of canned goods…anything that extends love to
another…anything that might cause the recipient to pause and consider our
motivation. Then we simply point to Jesus…and let Him take over from there. I
pray that we would keep our eyes and ears open to the opportunities to be a
true, selfless servant to the Lord. If we approach each day with the
willingness and desire to do the Lord’s will, while expecting nothing in return…and
without grumbling…I am convinced the Holy Spirit will work mighty things
through our lives. And who knows, we
might just experience this kind of incredible unexpected joy and purpose in
return…even when we weren’t seeking any return at all. To God be the glory!
