We often refer to our “conscience” as the voice in our minds
that keeps us in line. It’s that inner voice that warns us when we are about to
make a bad decision or notifies us when we have doing something wrong and need
to make amends. When we listen to our conscience, and avoid stepping in a mess,
we are often grateful and give ourselves a little “pat on the back”. But what
if our conscience is not simply some “little voice” in our mind…what if it goes
deeper? What if it is in fact the Holy Spirit that is guiding us? What if, as
mentioned in the text above, it is the Holy Spirit reminding us of everything
that Christ said in his life…reminding us of how we are to live our lives? What
if it’s the Holy Spirit that is saying “Hey, not a good idea, don’t do that”…or
“You really need to go make things right with that person you crossed earlier”.
It’s empowering to know that a part of the Triune God…Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit…actually dwells within us…as we see in John 14:17, “the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither
sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in
you.” It’s also a bit humbling…for when we use our bodies in a sinful
manner…when we do something that is shameful, destructive, and against the
commands of the Lord…the Holy Spirit is there firsthand, witnessing our behavior.
Thankfully there is grace…grace purchased by Christ…so that through faith in
him, we not only avoid just punishment, but we also benefit greatly from having
the Holy Spirit as an active part of our lives. To God be the glory!
