Wealth is a tricky animal. We obviously need some form of
money in order to live in this world. But if we focus too much on gaining wealth,
it starts to convince us that IT is the source of our confidence, strength, and
security. We start to believe that we are somehow more secure the higher our bank
balance rises. But wealth is incredibly fleeting…all it takes is something like
an unexpected layoff, a devastating natural disaster, or crippling health diagnosis
to suck the coffers dry. And the one thing that we once held as our strength and
foundation is suddenly no longer there for us…just an empty space where a
presumed sense of “security” and “confidence” once lay. Don’t get me wrong, money
is a necessary and essential part of living in this world. But the problem
arises when it becomes all-consuming in our lives…when our focus turns away
from living for the Lord and centers on living for the world and its riches. Thankfully we are not hopelessly distracted…for through the sacrifice
made by the Savior Jesus Christ, we don’t have to rely on worldly things…temporary
things…for our strength and security. For the gap that once stood between us
and God has been bridged with a cross…and we can find refuge in the Lord
Almighty! A wise Pastor was once hit the nail on the head when he said “Money talks…it
lies”. May we not be deceived by the wealth in our lives, securing our
foundation in something so temporary and deceitful…but rather may we become
firmly rooted in the Lord, trusting in the One thing that has been, is now, and
will be forever. To God be the glory!
