My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
When a parent disciplines a child, they are doing it because they want the best for that child. That want their child to acknowledge their mistakes and make changes to avoid repeating the same folly down the line. They want them to grow up to be productive and virtuous members of society, making a positive impact on the world. If a parent didn’t love their child, they simply wouldn’t care what they did…and they would not put forth effort to help that child change and grow. The same thing applies with our Father in heaven. He wants what is best for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11) and often times that leads to some pretty significant growing pains in our lives. We may have to overhaul some of the rooms in our hearts and minds…and it’s likely to get pretty uncomfortable. We may be required to toss aside old habits, loosen our grip on worldly things, or separate ourselves from certain relationships. But in the end, we will rise victorious….see Proverbs 2:7-8, “He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” So as God starts to work his discipline in our lives, may we not resist it, but rather welcome it in with open arms, eager to embrace the change. To God be the glory!
