And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Today some news came down from our nation’s leaders regarding a policy that impacts just about every single citizen of this country. Some may be pleased with the news, feeling a good decision was made, while others stand displeased, viewing the new direction as troubling. Shortly after the news was released, people started pounding the social networks and internet news sites, sharing their opinions about the news. Many of the messages hinted of an impulsive nature…as if people were sharing the first thought that came to mind. Some were gloating in the glory of the news as if to wave it in front of those opposed. Others were blasting the ruling with anger and frustration, tearing down the leaders that made the decision. The tricky thing about politics in this country is we often take off all other “hats” and don solely the “hat” of the political party or political platform of our choosing. And in that arena, pretty much anything goes. But as Christians, we must be careful how we react for we are representing Christ. Whether we are opposed to or supportive of the new direction our country is taking, we must be careful not to dip into sin in our reaction. We must remember that first and foremost, above all else, we are followers of Christ…and as followers of Christ, we are called to live a life worthy of the Gospel (Philippians 1:27), ridding ourselves of sinful language and behavior (Colossians 3:7-8), and loving even those that we might strongly disagree with (Matthew 5:43-48). Shortly after the news was released, a local Pastor and friend posted the following, very appropriate verses from the Book of James…1:19, “My dear friends, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” and…1:20, ”For mankind’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires”. We are blessed to live in a country where we can freely express our opinions and have a vote in the direction of the government. But we must be careful that we do not abandon our commitment to Christ in favor of a political or economic position. We are called to serve the Lord FIRST, above all else…may we embrace that privilege today in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord (1 Thessalonians 1:4). To God be the glory!
