Daily Verse: Matthew 20:28

Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

We typically rate the day based on what WE get from it. Did the world do what we wanted? Did we close the day fat and satisfied? Did we get what we wanted? When the answer to those questions is “no”, we rate the day as poor, sub-par, undesirable…not a day that we would like to repeat. But what if the day wasn’t about us? What if we approached the day from the perspective of serving rather than being served? What if we looked at a given day as an opportunity to do whatever we can to serve, rather than seeking out every way to be served? When Christ came to the world, he came as a servant. Hard to believe that the very Son of God was labeled as a servant, but that is exactly what he was…and he willingly embraced the role. He came down from the comforts of heaven to serve by literally laying down his life so that a bunch of pathetic, hopeless sinners might be rescued. Can we mirror this same servant attitude? Can we approach the day actively seeking ways to serve the Lord, rather than ourselves? A bit of a shocker perhaps, given our self-centered world, but certainly possible. What would that look like? Perhaps it means buying a sack of groceries for someone living on the sidewalk. Or maybe it means helping someone financially that has hit a rough patch. Maybe it means mowing the grass of a neighbor or helping a motorist with a flat tire. It doesn’t have to be monumental in our eyes…but it might be monumental in the eyes of those in need. May we embrace a servant attitude today so that when the sun finally sets, no matter what the final score is, we can sit back and say “The day was great because I used it to serve the Lord”. To God be the glory!
