But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice.
There is a popular player in the NFL that chooses to maintain a public profession of his faith in Christ…he does not hide it nor deny it, regardless of the situation. And as you might expect, this has ruffled some feathers around our country. It is logical to think that those who oppose Christianity would obviously be uncomfortable with this individual’s public stance…after all, they either believe in another god, or simply don’t believe in any god at all. But the thing that seems most troubling about the situation is the critical feedback that is sent his way from the Christian community. There are many that are questioning his motives, thinking he should “tone down” his approach, or even refrain from displaying his faith during a game or press conference. This leaves me puzzled…for as Christians, are we not supposed to spread the Gospel at all times, working for the Lord in every opportunity? The text above is written by Paul…and he addresses the realization that while he is imprisoned for his faith, there are many that are preaching the Gospel out of goodwill and righteous motives…as well as many preaching out of “selfish ambition, envy, and rivalry”, hoping to stir up additional trouble for Paul while he is in chains. But either way, Paul doesn’t seem to care…all he cares about is the true Gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed…even if it brings him greater discomfort. Applying this to modern times, Paul might say “I don’t care if he is thanking Jesus after a big victory, kneeling in the end zone after scoring a touchdown, or placing Gospel verses on his face during a game…the bottom line is he’s spreading the true message of Christ…and that is what is most important.” My prayer today is that we may all be so bold as to proclaim the message of the Gospel in our daily lives…not worrying about what “grief” we might receive or what others might think. For there is not greater purpose that to serve our King each and every day. To God be the glory!
