Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
This is an interesting verse. In the verse before this one, Acts 2:45, it mentions that these people sold all their possessions and gave it all to those in need. They needed nothing more than their faith in the Lord. Yet the text above states that they had “glad and sincere hearts”. Imagine that…you have people here that have no worldly possessions…the only thing they have left is their faith in Christ…and they are sincerely happy. Amazing! Especially considering the myth in our world that true happiness can be achieved through material items…surrounding ourselves with great wealth…relaying the message that those with the most wealth are the happiest, the most content, the most successful. Now I am not going to pretend that getting something new is not an enjoyable experience…after all, who doesn’t like turning on a new TV, snagging a new pair of Tony Lamas, or turning the key to a new vehicle. There is no denying that…after all, all good things come from the Lord (James 1:17)…he has chosen to bless us with life’s “comforts”. So where is the trouble in this equation? The trouble comes into play when we let material items consume us…when our focus turns to pursuing more and more…when our joy in life is rooted in what we are able to obtain…instead of from our relationship with the Lord. When we focus on worldly things, the well will eventually run dry…we will eventually run out of money…but when we focus on the Lord, we find an endless stream of joy, peace, and satisfaction…much like those in the verse above. May we seek to put our relationship with the Lord as our most valuable possession, seeking to strengthen that relationship and dependence daily. To God be the glory!
