In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
This is a very interesting verse, largely because it seems to directly contradict the tone of our society. In our world today, when we do something good, we expect the praise, or recognition, to come to us…we did it, therefore we deserve the appreciation and respect. Seems logical. But in the text above, we are instructed do “good deeds” so that others may see the good that is done…and not give US the praise…but rather turn to God and give HIM the praise. Very interesting…and this seems to imply two things: 1) When we do something good, it is God working through us…not us acting on our own; and 2) The “good deeds” are those that are done according to God’s standards, not the world’s. God has showered us with so many incredible blessings…even as we stand completely undeserving…and it is an incredible privilege for us to be able to actually do something that brings praise back to Him. Just imagine…a simple “good deed” by one of us can actually cause others to sing praises to the very Creator of the World! May we embrace this opportunity today, seeking out those “good deeds”, and savoring the praise that is given to our Lord in response! To God be the glory!
