Psalm 145:14

Psalm 145:14

The Lord sustains all who fall, And he raises up all who are bowed down.

I awoke this morning with the song On Eagles Wings playing in my head. It has been years since I last heard this song, yet this morning, there it was playing in my mind as if it had only been days. The familiar lyrics include: “And he will raise you up on eagles wings, Bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun, And hold you in the palm of His hand.” This is a song of great comfort, as it reassures us that God will always be at our side to lift us up when we fall. It’s possible that the words above from Psalm 145 helped inspire the lyrics for this great hymn. Or maybe it was Psalm 30:1 which states, “I will extol You, O LORD, for You have lifted me up, And have not let my enemies rejoice over me.”…or Psalm 3:3, “But You, O LORD, are a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.”…or Job 5:11, “So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety.”…or Psalm 40:2, “He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.”…or maybe Isaiah 40:31, “but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Regardless of the true source of inspiration for this great hymn, it reminds us of the tremendous peace we can find in God’s Word. It calls to mind the moments in God’s Word where he speaks to us the guarantee that we are his beloved and protected children. His Word is filled with abundant reassurances that He stands as our shield, our strength, our comforter, and our deliverer. We have the beautiful guarantee that no matter what trouble we encounter in this life, we don’t have to endure it on our own. And no matter the magnitude of our current struggle, we can find peace in knowing that it is only temporary and that certain victory awaits us. So when our story in this life comes to a final close, as believers in his Son, will be lifted up one final time, to rest in the presence of the Lord, free of all pain, free of all hardship and struggle, free of all sin. What an incredibly blessed people we are! All glory to God, our great deliverer and King!
