Jeremiah 32:26-27

Jeremiah 32:26-27

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

You might categorize the question posed by the Lord in this text as a rhetorical question. God is not really unclear on what he is able to achieve and doesn’t really need confirmation from Jeremiah. But perhaps God is posing this question to make a point to Jeremiah, and to us. As man, we can list hundreds of things that are too difficult and even impossible for us to achieve. But what may be impossible for man, is certainly possible for God. Just look at the New Testament, and the numerous examples of times Jesus performed the impossible. Restoring the ability to walk to a cripple man…bringing sight to the blind…healing the gravely ill…raising the dead to life. All are things, that with only the mere hands of man, are impossible. Yet with God in the equation, it is completely possible, altogether real, and downright miraculous. In our lives today, we draw a sense of pride and strength from handling things on our own, sounding our independence. We like to think we can take life’s challenges head-on and defeat them with our own two hands. Sometimes we arrive at victory, while at other times we receive complete defeat. The ironic thing though is that in both victory and defeat, we have the misconception that we are somehow operating solo. If we win, then we did it with our own steely determination, profound skill, and dogged determination. And if we lose, we think we are alone to lick our wounds, we are bitter failures, and we alone shoulder the burden of clawing our way out of the hole. When Jesus died on the cross, he restored a connection between creation and Creator that was once severed by sin. Through our faith in Christ as the Savior to the world, we have a direct line to the Creator…we have the ear of the Almighty…we have the undivided attention to the greatest power known to all creation. Yet, we don’t seek Him…we don’t call for him to direct us each day. We don’t spend time in his house each week, receiving the tangible form us his gift to man through the bread and the wine. Jeremiah 29:12-13 reminds us of what we are to do each day, stating “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” When we seek God…when we deeply and genuinely call out to him…we find him. We find his love, we find his wisdom, we find his strength…we find his determination, his mercy, and his grace. We find the ability to overcome the difficulties this broken world puts in our paths. We find the ability to rise with confidence from our downfalls and turn all the praise to him in our victories. We find the ability to love, to care, and to forgive, even when it seems almost impossible to do so. If we try to navigate this life apart from our God, it’s going to be a long, miserable, and brutal road. But if we choose to seek the Lord with each new day, life may still be challenging, but we will have a source of hope, strength, and confidence that we can’t get on our own…and we will cling tightly to the promise of THE great victory that awaits us in the end. May we seek him today and every day…for NOTHING is too hard for our great God! To God alone be the glory!
