“I will look on you
with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my
covenant with you. You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will
have to move it out to make room for the new”
It’s unfortunately pretty common to find ourselves falling
into the trap of focusing on the negative in each day instead of the positive.
We far too easily gravitate to thoughts and words around how things are not
right or how we don’t have enough of something rather than dwelling, and resting,
in all the blessings in our lives. The words above were spoken by God to the Israelites
and seem to effectively capture how much
good God places into our lives. Just the other day, I was complaining about an
awful day at work that was followed by a long, tedious commute home. I was
complaining about my steady employment and my safe commute, to my beautiful wife,
while standing in my comfortable home, and preparing dinner for my two healthy
children that were playing in the next room. I was focusing on the little bit
that was difficult in my life while missing all the greatness that I was making
seemingly invisible around me. It’s incredible how even when we are surrounded
by so many blessings, God continues to layer on one after another. We aren’t
even finished consuming one gift before another is placed at our feet. May we
approach each day in humility, seeking to slow down a bit and take account of
all the good that God is providing in our lives. And even if in our misguided and
broken “wisdom” we somehow think we are still getting short-changed a bit, we
need to focus only on the promised finish line…the end game…where we will stand
before the Lord and receive the ultimate gift of salvation through the Savior. And
if that is really all that we have, then we have all that we need and we are rich
beyond measure! It doesn’t get any better than that! To God alone be all glory and
honor.
