Proverbs 12:1

Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.

Being corrected can be difficult to swallow. For when someone corrects us, they have not only noticed our mistake, but they are now bringing it to our attention. It’s humbling because it reveals our flaws…it shows us that we have messed up in some manner. And let’s be real here…no one likes to be told that they are wrong. But correction is usually handed down to actually benefit the offender. Something wrong has occurred that is either immediately damaging to the offender or has the potential to be damaging. So another person steps in and issues correction to prevent the damage. God does the same thing. When we sin, God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, making us aware that something isn’t right. When we make a mistake, God lets us know that not only have we messed up, but that we need to chart a new course so that we don’t get it wrong again. And God does this because he loves us. He hands down the discipline and correction because he wants the best for our lives…and sin is certainly not the best thing for our lives. In fact, sin is the root of all that is wrong in our lives. It’s where the brokenness began back in the garden with Adam and its where the brokenness persists in our lives today. God’s not disciplining us because he wants to punish us and see us squirm under his mighty fist. No, the punishment for our sin was already dished out in its entirety through Christ. Rather, like a father cares for his child, God cares for each one of us…and he works diligently to keep us from the pitfalls that we foolishly gravitate to. At times God’s correction may seem like it hits us square between the eyes, while at other times, it may be quietly applied in a more subtle manner. However God hands down his correction, we must be receptive to his way…we must welcome the discipline that he applies and trust in the new path that he wants us to follow. Thankfully he doesn’t just reveal our mistakes and then leave us to figure out the way to make things right…thankfully he walks with us as we work to get things back on the right track. So today, may we welcome God’s correction in our lives and give thanks that our Creator cares enough to correct our aimless and destructive ways. To God alone be the glory!
