Philippians 1:27

Philippians 1:27

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

What does it mean to act “in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ”? The gospel of Christ is such a massive, all-encompassing thing, that at times instructions like this might seem too complex and overwhelming to actually pinpoint in our lives. But maybe it’s not that difficult. Perhaps it deals with not living in fear, worry, and doubt, and rather living in security and confidence, knowing that however this life unfolds, we are secure in our promised union in heaven. Maybe it centers on cherishing the gospel and serving God instead of cherishing wealth and serving ourselves. Perhaps it means that we should interact with others in a manner that aligns with the message of the gospel. If we get in a disagreement with a spouse or family member, we should act and speak in love, tolerance, and understanding…in a manner that would be pleasing to God. If another person sins against us in some way, we should react with the same genuine forgiveness and love that is so deeply rooted in the gospel. Maybe that’s what it is talking about. Maybe it’s keying on how we should live each day…seeking to live joyfully, in gratitude, and thanksgiving, regardless of our circumstances…because we hold the great wealth of the gospel. The gift we have in the gospel is something that cannot be matched by this world…it is perfectly eternal, completely satisfying, and wholeheartedly sufficient. If we were stripped of everything in this life…all our possessions, friends and family…and all we had was our faith in Christ and the promises secured in the gospel…we would still stand in great wealth, power, and security. There is simply no greater gift than the gospel of Christ…and there is simply no better way to conduct ourselves than in a manner that is worthy of the gospel of Christ! May we seek that each and every day. To God alone be the glory!
