Romans 11:33-36

Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God,    that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

There have been many times in my life where I thought I knew where I needed to be. There have been many times where I have what I believe is the “best” direction laid out for my future. I’ve diligently jumped through the hoops, taken the necessary steps, achieved the degrees and credentials, and made the most educated decision on where I should be going. But when the journey has been completed, I find that I am far from where I had intended to be. In fact, I find that had I somehow remained on my intended path, things would not have turned out so well. I recall graduating from college, finance degree in hand, convinced that I needed to be in the banking industry. I was confident that this was the best path to take in launching my career. God had a different plan. After three years of working in corporate finance, the banking industry went through the “mortgage crisis”, with thousands of mortgages defaulting, banks closing their doors, and employees finding themselves without a job. To this day, I still get kind of a slightly nervous and completely relieved chuckle at how incredibly wise God was at this point in my life. He gracefully directed my life away from something that I saw as a surefire bet. I was completely convinced that I knew where I needed to start my career, and had I stubbornly stuck to that path instead of taking the Lord’s direction, I would likely have found myself unemployed and scrambling for direction. Far too often we either underestimate God’s wisdom or ignore it all together. We get filled with all kinds of worldly accolades, degrees, and “expert” experience that we start to push God’s great wisdom out of the picture. The verse above does a great job at capturing God’s greatness. There simply is no one with greater intellect, capacity, and capability than God. No one gives advice and counsel to God…God doesn’t turn to anyone with a problem and seek their wisdom and advice…God never finds himself stumped and perplexed, grasping for someone to lead him to the best decision. God’s wisdom is simply sufficient for ALL scenarios and situations…there is nothing lacking, in ability or content, when it comes to God’s wisdom. As the Creator, everything good comes from Him…everything good works through Him…and everyone that he has created is meant to serve Him. It all revolves around God. And what a joyful realization that is…for God is for us, wholeheartedly devoted to achieving the best outcome for our lives. Need convincing of that? Look no further than Jesus…God sent him for OUR benefit. God didn’t need to be rescued and redeemed…we did, we needed to be hauled out from the wreckage that we had created. That’s real love. May we seek the Lord’s wisdom with each new day, may we genuinely trust the direction he provides, and may we raise our hands in praise each day for the love that he showers upon us through Christ! To God alone be the glory!
