Romans 4:19-21

Romans 4:19-21

Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

We pray to God for direction, strength, and wisdom. We pray that God may point our lives in the best direction, that God may heal our troubles, and that God may rescue us from harm. But when God responds in a way that we were not expecting, we question the direction/wisdom that has been handed down. It can be so far from what we were expecting that at times we might think that maybe God hasn’t responded at all and this is just “life” playing itself out. Or God responds in an way that calls us to overhaul some part of our life…and that overhaul can be uncomfortable, wrapped in uncertainty, or socially unpopular. We start to doubt God…we start to think that maybe we have a better idea in mind…we start to allow the devil to plant seeds of doubt about who really is in control of our lives. The train starts to derail because we are not fully trusting God…we are still gripping the wheel and not allowing God to guide our path. In the text above, Abraham provide an excellent example of trusting God. God was going to give him and his wife a child when they were old enough to be considered great-grandparents in today’s world. Abraham could have shrugged off God’s message as nonsense, rationalizing it as scientifically impossible, and moving on to something different that made more sense. Yet he did not, he remained steadfastly committed and obedient to God. If God said it would happen, then Abraham believe it would happen. No questioning, no trying to analyze the likelihood based on worldly logic, and no doubting that God could pull off what was impossible for man. We should all aspire to have the same depth of faith and belief as Abraham had. We should all aspire to trust that the direction God provides for our lives is the best direction and the only direction that we should look to follow.  No, it’s not easy or even enjoyable at times. But we don’t walk the path alone. No, God is not some puppet master sitting high above calling all the shots and snickering when we trip up. Through the Holy Spirit, God walks each day with us. Through the Spirit, God experiences our victories and defeats and God responds with the exact right answer and at the exact right time. Trust him today…trust that he is there…and trust that he deeply loves and cares for you. To God alone be the glory!
