Psalm 62:5-6

Psalm 62:5-6

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

We have so many things we can fret and worry about in this life. Our jobs, our wealth, our children grades, our health, our status and popularity…all can get us so knotted up, wringing our hands over what might be to come. We run from task to task and from event to event, filling the days with activity. And at the end of each day, through all our efforts, we are hardly better off than the day before. So when do we rest? When do we truly “turn-off” and seek true rest? Even the traditional Sunday, the intended “day of rest”, has become just another day to win another game or make another dollar. The text above from Psalms keys on an important and truly beneficial aspect of our lives. We can find rest in the Lord…we can find peace in the Lord….we can find calm from the sprint and drag of life. When our soul rests in the Lord, we are not consumed with pursuing worldly gain. We still make the most of the gifts that God provides, but we don’t make that our solitary, all-consuming goal in life. And true rest in the Lord means we don’t have to fret about tomorrow. For if tomorrow brings us great wealth or completely drains our pockets, we are still well. If tomorrow wrecks us with illness or leaves us relatively unscathed, we are still well. If tomorrow leaves us surrounded by friends and family or alone without a person in sight, we are still well. For no matter how this life unfolds, the end is set. The promise has been made, the price has been paid, and the great gift awaits all those who put their faith in the Son. So let’s be still…let’s find true rest in the Lord and stop fretting the events of each day…let’s trust that God has it all in control. The hymn “Be Still My Soul” wonderfully captures why we can be still:

Be still, my soul: The hour is hast'ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

May we seek true rest in God each day…may we make time to dwell in his Word, soak in his promises, and put aside the worry, anxiety, and fear. For all is well in the Lord. To God alone be the glory!
