I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of
thousands assail me on every side.
The verse written by King David above invokes such great peace.
It captures the reality that because the Lord is on our side, we can be at
peace. To truly sleep, we must be at peace. We can’t be knotted up with worry
and fear for that would keep our minds running and our defenses on high alert. David
acknowledges in the text that even with tens of thousands coming to attack him
on every side, he can still lie down and sleep. And it is only through the Lord
that this is possible, for it is the Lord that keeps him well. Perhaps David is
keying on the concept of his wellbeing in this life and the life to come. While
we are here on this earth, we have the Lord protecting us. And if this earthly
life comes to a close, we are still cared for by the Lord. Through our faith in
Christ, when the lights go out here, we are ushered into a new life. So whether
we live or die, we are the Lord’s…we are in his family, we are provided for and
we are protected. There is no greater peace than this…knowing that whatever
happens in this life, we remain forever in the Lord’s care. Whether we are rich
or poor, weak or strong, popular or relatively unknown, we are still destined
for greatness…because the Lord provides. May we find peace in this reality today…may
we find rest in the Lord…and may we give thanks for the ability to sleep in
peace and rise again through the Lord! To God alone be the glory!
