Hebrews 2:1

Hebrews 2:1

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away

Imagine completing a class in advanced mathematics, then you put the material and books down for a whole year before being presented a test on the course matter. It is highly likely that we would be completely dumfounded as we stared at the test of what would then be foreign content. A few things might look familiar and we might be able to scratch together at least some semblance of a correct but for the most part, we would fail the test miserably. We would have needed to stay in the content over the course of the year, regularly familiarizing ourselves with the concepts, rules, and formulas to be able to perform well come test time. It would not be something that we could just “wing” and pull off in the end. Our lives and our faith in God is similar to this situation. We are presented daily with tests and we are challenged to respond accordingly. But if we aren’t picking up God’s Word on a regular basis, then we are likely to fail those tests. If we aren’t truly opening up God’s Word and really digging into his commands, then we will not know how to appropriately respond come test time. Much like the mathematics test, we might be able to scratch together a general idea of how to respond in righteousness but overall, we will fail. Our relationship with the Lord is FAR too important to just “wing” it. Our relationship and commitment to the Lord is the single most important thing in our lives and should be our motivation from sunup to sundown. Our goal of each day should be to serve the Lord…in every thought, word, and action, we should be focused on serving the Lord. The obvious questions then is, “What does serving the Lord actually look like? What do I actually need to do?” Get in the Word…open the Bible and find out. It’s all printed there before us…clear instructions, lessons, and examples of how we are to live…how we are to serve the Lord. Thankfully unlike the math test, we don’t hold the pencil alone. Through prayer, the Holy Spirit is there to guide us to the right answers. What a God we have here…not only does he give us extensive clear instructions, but he also sends the Holy Spirit to guide us through each test! May we stay in God’s Word daily so that we may never drift away from serving him, experiencing his love, and resting in the peace we have through Christ. To God alone be the glory!
