The thing about living according to what the world views as right
and wrong is that we are being deceived…completely deceived into thinking that
living this way is best for us. We do what feels good at the time and often
times pay little mind to whether or not it fits into God’s plan. It feels good
to speak slanderously about a person that gets under our skin…it feels good to
be involved in a physical relationship outside of marriage…it feels good to partake
in excessive indulgence of food and drink…it feels good to verbally tear down
the person in the next car over that just made a questionable move in traffic. The
“good” feeling we may get is misleading. For anything that we do apart from God…anything
that we do that contradicts the commands handed down from the Lord…will
eventually tear us apart and is anything but “good” for us. We become
imprisoned by the rage and anger that becomes a regular part of our daily
commute, leaving us a knotted up ball of mess upon arriving home. We become
enslaved to the gossip that flows freely from our lips, destroying the trust
and friendships we once had. We become prisoners to the lust and filth that
fills our screens and distorts the way we view other people and crumbles our once
beloved relationships. When we choose a path of sin, we become slaves to those
sins. But as we see in verses 4:6, through Christ, the chains can be broken: “But when the kindness and love of God our
Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but
because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by
the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our
Savior”. May we choose today to cling to the Savior, allowing him to cut
the chains of sin that restrict our lives, and refuse to return to our previous
lives as slaves to sin. To God be the glory!
