Daily Verse: Mark 9:23

" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

The words above were spoken by Jesus while he was witnessing a boy that was possessed by a demon. The boy was wrecked with seizures, foaming at the mouth and gnashing his teeth. The father of this boy spoke to Jesus saying “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." The dialogue between Jesus and this man highlights how weak our faith in Christ can be at times. “If you can” the man spoke, indicating that there was some doubt in his mind as to whether or not the Lord had the ability to heal his son. We can take the role of the Monday Morning Quarterback, shaking our head at this man, saying “As if there is ANYTHING that Jesus cannot accomplish. Come on buddy!” But we need to pause in passing judgment on this father for there are times that we too display this same questioning of the Lord’s power…where our faith is weak and we wonder whether or not God CAN really meet our need. We wonder if God can really cure a disease, if he can provide a new source of income, restore a broken relationship, put food into a hungry stomach, or place a roof over a homeless family. The man responds appropriately in verse 24 when he immediately exclaims “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” My prayer is that we too take the same posture as this man, crying out to God that we DO believe that he can do ALL THINGS…that he can meet our EVERY need! But we need not get discouraged if at times our need is not met exactly as we had intended or requested. It is not an indication of God’s inability to meet our need, but rather an indication that he has a BETTER plan of action. And we can rest assured that his plan is always better than what we may have in mind. To God be the glory!
