To be “merciful”,
is to be compassionate, kind, lenient, generous…to be sympathetic, gracious,
charitable, and forgiving. It’s incredible how merciful our Lord is to us each
day. While we still speak sinful words, harbor sinful thoughts, and commit
sinful actions, he still remains compassionate, generous, charitable, and forgiving.
God would be justified to count up our daily mistakes and hold us to the fire
at the end of the day, dolling out the punishment that we are due. He would be
justified to strip us of every blessing that he previously provided…our homes,
our food, our jobs, our money, our family. Yet he does not, for he is merciful.
So since he is merciful, we are called to be merciful as well. We are to be compassionate
to someone struggling to get on their feet…we are to be generous when
approached with an outstretched hand looking for a meal…we are to be lenient
when someone crosses us in a negative way…we are to forgive, no matter what
wrong has been committed. Not just because it is “right”, but because it is
exactly what is extended to us on a daily basis from the Lord…continuous and
complete mercy! We can’t be perfect…therefore we depend wholeheartedly on God
being merciful. And if it were not for God’s mercy…if it were not for that
incredible, unexplainable, illogical LOVE from God…we would be completely out
of luck. May the Lord fill our lives with mercy for those around us, so that we
may mirror the same love, compassion, and forgiveness that has been extended to
each of us. To God be the glory!
