The words above were spoken by Christ shortly after he
washed the feet of his disciples. With the help of verses 4 and 5, we get a picture
of what Christ did…”so he got up from the
meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After
that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet,
drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” Here you have THE
guest of honor at the meal, down on his hands and knees, actually washing the
dirty feet of the men at the meal. Just imagine the faces of the disciples in the
room as Jesus started into the chore…shock, confusion…maybe even a little shame
that this perfect man was washing their nasty feet. Jesus didn’t take this
humble position to simply be nice to his dinner mates, rather he was using it
as an example for the disciples to mirror in their own lives….showing them how
they should treat others…displaying humility, kindness, and the heart of a
servant. As followers of Christ, we are to mirror the life that Christ lived. Sure,
we won’t be able to replicate the incredible miracles that he performed (e.g.
water to wine, dead to life, blind to sight). But we can certainly love as he
loved, forgive as he forgave, and care as he cared. It might require us to get
a bit uncomfortable, maybe shed a few zeros in the bank account, or lose a few
hours of sleep…but in the end, we can look back and see a life lived well…a
life lived reflecting the Lord. May we strive in our lives today to mirror the
life of Christ, allowing the living God to shine through us. And when the world
looks at us as the disciples likely looked at Christ…confused, shocked, maybe a
little amazed...we can simply point to the Lord, giving him the credit, and showing
the world what a big deal Jesus Christ is! To God be the glory!
