He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.
The “He” referenced above is God. In Psalm 18, King David explains how he called out to God for help…verse 6 “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.” David acknowledged that God was real and that God could be reached through prayer. And when David called out to the Lord, he did not go unheard…as verse 6 continues “From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears”. But God didn’t just hear him and remain indifferent. God didn’t view David’s issue as unimportant or not worthy of his attention. Instead God responded…and boy did he respond in a mighty way…as we see in verses 7:15, “The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—the dark rain clouds of the sky. Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, Lord, at the blast of breath from your nostrils”. God is not timid, meek, or restrained when his children are in trouble…when his children are in need of rescue. We are not meant to figure out this life on our own. We are not meant to rely on our own wits and abilities. We are meant to include God in our journey. We are meant to call out to him in prayer, stand confident that he hears our prayers, and wait patiently on his response. If we are living our lives for the Lord and we have put our faith in Jesus Christ, God will provide the rescue that we need. God will reach down and remove the pain, the suffering, the conflict, and the trouble. He will provide direction, purpose, and peace where it once lacked. May we call out to him today as David did in Psalm 18, trusting that he hears our prayer and will respond. To God be the glory!
