I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
Imagine what it would be like to be truly content regardless of the circumstances. Imagine sitting in an isolated, window-less cell, convicted yet completely innocent…and still completely content. Or laying in a hospital bed, fighting a ferocious disease…completely content. Or living on the street, homeless, no job, no food…and yet, still content. Paul professes that he has learned the secret to being content…whether he is overflowing with wealth or standing empty handed…he is satisfied, comfortable, content. Seems impossible, right? Yet it’s not…for through faith in Christ, we have ALL that we need. We have a guaranteed promise of complete eternal salvation. Sure, our lives may not be as plush or as comfortable as we would like…we may not be rolling in money, traveling the world, and living in a mansion…but we can still be content. We focus so much on the here and now and fail to focus on what is ahead. Our lives are just a blink of the eye when compared to a view of eternity. In Philippians 3:20-21, we see that we are not even considered citizens of this world…we are meant for paradise in heaven with God…a place where there is no struggle, no hardships, and no want. Imagine if someone said “In one year, I am going to give you a check for one billion dollars”. For the next 365 days, we would probably be completely content…we wouldn’t have a care in the world because in a year we would be completely set. Faith in Christ leads to the same thing…when our lights finally dim and this world comes to a close, we are going to be completely set…we will have a place in God’s kingdom…no worry, no struggle, no want…just complete peace, rest, and happiness. Nothing holds a candle to what we possess through faith in Christ. May we maintain a focus on that each day, so that no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, we will be content in knowing that we are called one of God’s own…and that comes with a one-way ticket to the Kingdom! Can’t beat that! To God be the glory!
