…and find out what pleases the Lord.
This verse institutes a call to action. Instead of waiting for someone to tell us what pleases the Lord, we are called to seek it out on our own…to actively dig into God’s Word and discover what he really wants from us. Kind of like if someone came to us and said “find out what the code is to that vault and we will be set for life”. Now while the “loot” inside God’s Word is not necessarily a pile of cash, it is no less valuable. And we should pursue it with as much or more enthusiasm as a bucket of money. And oddly enough, this verse is not followed with “when you get time” or “when things slow down at work”. It simply instructs us to “find out”…as in, do it now, today, right this moment. We don’t necessarily have to stop our cars in the middle of the road and break open the text. We can find out what God wants from us through prayer…by simply asking him what he wants for our lives. But we can’t get discouraged when we don’t hear a booming voice pouring down from the clouds, giving us specific and timely instruction. Rather we must be patient and faithful, keeping our eyes and ears open to his response. And when we are not behind the wheel, we need to take time to crack open his Word…putting down the remote, closing the Internet and doing nothing but burying our face in his book. When we make time to seek out the Lord, we will discover what pleases him…we will discover specifically what he wants from our lives…how we should speak, think, and act…and above all else, we will find that true relationship and love that comes only from the one true God…the Creator, the Almighty, the One who gave all. To God be the glory!
